Southern
Charm:
My
Experience
Growing
Up
in
the
Deep
South
Growing
up
in
the
deep
South,
I
learned
early
on
the
value
of
hospitality
and
manners.
Folks
down
here
take
their
pleases
and
thank
yous
seriously,
and
never
pass
up
a
chance
to
offer
a
neighborly
nod
and
some
sweet
tea.
But
it's
not
just
the
charm
that
sets
us
apart-
it's
the
food.
Grits,
fried
chicken,
and
sweet
potato
pie
are
staples
of
our
cuisine.
We
love
a
good
barbecue
and
know
that
nothing
beats
a
cast-iron
skillet
for
cooking
up
our
favorite
recipes.
Of
course,
our
regional
dialect
is
equally
distinctive.
You
might
hear

say
"y'all"
or
"fixin'
to"
in
casual
conversation-
and
don't
be
surprised
if
a
stranger
strikes
up
a
conversation
with
you
in
the
grocery
store
checkout
line.
But
living
in
the
South
isn't
all
sweet
tea
and
hospitality.
We
face
our
share
of
challenges,
including
poverty
and
racial
inequality.
It's
important
to
acknowledge
these
issues
while
also
celebrating
the
good
parts
of
our
culture.
All
in
all,
I
wouldn't
trade
my
Southern
upbringing
for
anything.
I'm
proud
of
my
roots
and
the
unique
charm
that
comes
with
it.
So
if
you're
ever
down
this
way,
don't
be
a
stranger-
we
welcome
all
visitors
with
open
arms
and
a
big
ol'
smile.
