My
Father's
Gift:
The
Story
of
My
Name
My
name
is
Oliver.
It's
a
simple
name,
but
it
means
a
lot
to
me.
I'm
proud
of
it,
and
I
owe
it
all
to
my
father.
My
father
was
born
and
raised
in
England,
but
he
moved
to
the
United
States
when
he
was
in
his
early
twenties.
When
my
mother
was
pregnant
with
me,
my
father
was
thrilled.
He
wanted
to
give
his
first-born
son
a
meaningful
name,
one
that
would
represent
his
heritage
and
his
hopes
for
my
future.
After
much
thought,
my
father
chose
the
name
Oliver.
It's
a
name
that
has
a
long
history
in
England,
and
it
also
has
a
lot
of
meaning
in
literature.
My
father
loves
to
read,
and
one
of
his
favorite
novels
is
"Oliver
Twist"
by
Charles
Dickens.
He
saw
the
name
as
a
tribute
to
one
of
his
favorite
books,
but
also
as
a
symbol
of
hope.
My
father
has
always
been
someone
who
believes
in
the
power
of
literature,
and
he
wanted
to
pass
that
love
of
books
and
stories
on
to
me.
He
hoped
that
by
giving
me
the
name
Oliver,
I
would
also
grow
to
love
reading
and
writing.
And
he
was
right.
I
don't
remember
the
first
time
I
realized
how
special
my
name
was,
but
it's
always
been
a
part
of
who
I
am.
As
I
got
older,
I
read
"Oliver
Twist"
for
myself,
and
I
marveled
at
the
way
Dickens
brought
his
characters
to
life.
I
also
discovered
other
books
and
authors
that
spoke
to
me
in
different
ways.
Now,
as
an
adult,
I
realize
that
my
name
is
more
than
just
a
way
to
identify
myself.
It's
a
connection
to
my
father
and
his
past,

and
the
power
of
stories,
and
a
reminder
of
the
hope
he
had
for
me
when
I
was
just
a
baby.
I'm
grateful
to
my
father
for
giving
me
this
name,
and
for
instilling
in
me
a
love
of
books
and
a
curiosity
about
the
world.
I
hope
to
make
him
proud
and
to
continue
to
live
up
to
the
potential
that
he
saw
in
me
all
those
years
ago.
