a
lover
of
literature
and
mythology,
I
have
always
been
fascinated
by
the
ancient
Chinese
tale
of
Journey
to
the
West.
The
story
follows
a
group
of
misfits,
including
a
monkey
king
and
a
pig
monk,
as
they
journey
across
China
to
retrieve
ancient
Buddhist
scriptures.
It’s
an
epic
adventure
full
of
danger,
humor,
and
enlightenment
–
and
it
all
takes

against
the
backdrop
of
China’s
stunning
natural
landscapes. So
when
I
had
the
opportunity
to
visit
China
last
year,
I
knew
I
had
to
trace
the
footsteps
of
the
novel’s
protagonists.
I
started
my
journey
in
Xi’an,
the
ancient
capital
city
that
served
as
the
starting
point
for
the
characters
in
the
book.
I
walked
along
the
city
walls,
imagining
the
monkey
king
causing
trouble
as
he
escaped
from
the
celestial
heavens.
From
there,
I
traveled
west
to
the
lush
mountains
of
Shaanxi
province,
where
I
hiked
through
dense
forests
and
visited
remote
temples
hidden
among
the
peaks. My
next
stop
was
the
province
of
Sichuan,
famous
for
its
spicy
cuisine
and
pandas.
Here,
I
watched
performers
put
on
traditional
face-changing
shows
in
Chengdu
and
visited
the
incredible
Leshan
Giant
Buddha
–
a
UNESCO
World
Heritage
Site
that
is
one
of
the
largest
stone
Buddha
statues
in
the
world. But
the
highlight
of
my
trip
to
Sichuan
was
undoubtedly
my
visit
to
Emei
Shan,
one
of
the
four
sacred
mountains
of
Chinese
Buddhism.
I
spent
two
days
hiking
up
narrow
paths,
passing
by
shimmering
waterfalls
and
verdant
valleys,
until
I
reached
the
Golden
Summit
–
a
peak
that
rises
almost
3,100
meters
above
sea
level.
From
there,
I
watched
the
sunrise
light
up
the
mountain
range
and
felt
as
though
I’d
achieved
a
small
measure
of
the
enlightenment
sought
by
the
characters
in
Journey
to
the
West. My
journey
through
western
China
was
truly
unforgettable.
As
I
left
its
breathtaking
landscapes
behind,
I
felt
grateful
for
the
chance
to
have
followed
in
the
footsteps
of
the
monkey
king,
Tripitaka,
and
their
companions.
It
was
a
journey
that
truly
revealed
the
wonders
of
this
ancient
tale
and
the
beauty
of
the
natural
world.
