ZBY is a three-letter acronym for Zbigniew, the Polish name of my grandfather. But how did this name end up being my name? Well, my parents were not just following a family tradition, but rather honoring the legacy of a remarkable man. Zbigniew was born in 1924 in a small town in Poland. He lived through the horrors of WWII and was a soldier in the Polish Army during the war. After the war, he became a highly skilled mechanic and worked for one of the biggest factories in Poland. However, his passion for adventure and exploration led him to immigrate to Australia in the 1950s, leaving his family and friends behind. In Australia, Zbigniew started a new life, learned English and worked hard to support himself. He eventually got married and had children, one of whom is my father. Zbigniew was an incredible role model for my father and my entire family. He showed us what resilience, courage, and perseverance truly meant. When my parents were expecting their first child, they wanted to choose a unique and meaningful name. They decided to honor my grandfather by using the initials of his name. And so, I became ZBY.
